To celebrate pride month, throughout June we will be asking “What does Pride mean to you?” We’ve spoken to people from across our vibrant scene and community.
Today we spoke to Lee from one of Londons hottest brands Jamie HP that’s getting ready to return.
Here’s what he had to say:
GLL: What does Pride mean to you?
Lee: Unity seeing the guys arrive when they realise for the 1st time in their lives they’re not the only gay in the village
GLL: Tell us about your first Pride experience, what & where was it?
Lee: Jubilee Gardens there was only about 100 people marching over Waterloo bridge the following year 1000s marched for Clause 28
GLL: What is your favourite part of Pride?
Lee: Seeing old friends
GLL: Do you have a favourite Pride memory?
Lee: On Clapham Common, Stuffing a Friend, Cuddly Dudley with cash around his waist with tape from working at Pride all day, when we realised we were the only people left on the Clapham Common after all the Fairground staff had cleared out leaving us alone in a porter cabin counting the cash from the fairground. After a really busy pride, he looked like a weebal.
GLL: Why do you think Pride is still important?
Lee: Very there still so much hate out there it’s even more important now than ever.
I just wish they would get rid of the wrist bans and let everyone who wants to go on the march go for it.
